Mechanicals work fine for elk.  I've used spitfire mechanicals (100 grains).  I was shooting a light 360 grain arrow(total arrow weight), 70 lbs of pull on the bow and a 3 blade spitfire.  I shot through the elk and burried the tip to the insert in a hard dead tree.  My setup was a complete no no to the die hard heavy arrow using elk hunters of today.  My first elk kill was a 70 lb bow (PSE) a 560 grain (total arrow weight) aluminum arrow with a 3 blade fixed broadhead weighing 125 grains.  I got 1 ft of penetration.  Killed the elk, but the difference was the bow.  Todays newer bows are so much more efficient and shoot with so much more energy than they did years ago.  Shot placement is the key.  Hit where you aim.

rsb_924 & Bow_dude.

Again i am not the most knowledgable hunter.  I lack alot of experience.  I have been out alot and have had the privelege of seeing alot.  But I lack the "sealing the deal" part of the whole thing.  i have heard by many elk hunters that Fixed blades are better because having something cut on contact and to get cutting incase you smack a shoulder or strong rib.  Mechanicals i've been told that they work well.  But again shot placement is key.

I have a dozen Kumasi's (Mechanicals) and a half dozen Quattros (4 Blade).  I am stuck between the two.  Shooting my targets thus far.  I am shooting 280 fps and they open every time.  I just hope they are strong enough for a thick elk rib.  Bow_dude, with your spitfires; where did you hit your elk?  What was your setup? Speed? KE? ect.

With the spitfire (100 grains), I was shooting a Mathews Feather Max single cam.  103 fps, 70 lb draw weight, 30 inch draw length, goldtip 5575, 3 fletch vanes (2.6 inches long).  Total weight of the arrow was between 350 and 360 grains.  Can't remember for sure, but likely closer to the 350 grains weight.  I shot it in the pocket behind the shoulder, through the ribs.  My bear was the same bow and arrows, but I used a Muzzy 100 grain and increased the weight to 400 grains because Idaho says no mechanicals and 400 grains minimum.  Same results, same arrow placement.

Shot an elk once using a muzzy fixed blade and hit it on an angling shot, arrow went in hit the back bone, turned, traveled all the way through the elk length wise and came out its butt.  Had a star right on the anus.   A complete pass through.  I was using some beman carbons 5565's.  Don't know the weight, it was too long ago, but I'd venture to guess it was under 400 grains.  I just rarely shoot carbons over 400.

Well I think i found a solution to my problem. shooting my Axis arrows I kept getting some weird flight with broadheads and not alot of consistancy.  So I figured it out.  I got some ACC 300's and will tune those as I have ACC's in the past.   Cool  Shooting a fixed 3 blade and lining up blazer vanes or a broadhead vane to the blades.  Last time I did that I was grouping broadheads out to 80 yards in the size of orange. I ran the numbers on Archers advantage.  It is guestimating that I will be shooting (at 72 lbs) 291 fps.  and about 82.6 lbs of KE.  I think that it would be difficult at best for any Elk or Deer to catch that.  The only down side so far.  Is I haven't shot 70 lbs for over 2 years.  Now I'll need to beef up and get to work on getting used to the 70 again.

Well bud if you can stick a Deer faster than i can than I'd say you deserve the elk tag too.  I can tell you now an elk hunting and bugling with some of those big bulls can be a good rush and you'll love it.  Good luck deer hunting!!!

HA Cheesy  I am about to adopt the idea "if its brown, its down mentallity" Grin  I am a bit anxious just to stick something.  I am already dialingin broadheads.  I am just a little to the right clear out to 60 yards.  just enough to be fatal.  But i had better hit hard enough to shatter some shoulders.  i will play with my sights a bit more so I am hitting perfect.  I am just happy the Blazers on my ACC's are keeping that arrow flying tight.

that is a great gift when you have heads flying that well.  I have had that a few times and i finally found a setup that will do the same for me.  i was shooting field point accurate out to 80 yards today I drilled a 3 inch circle out to 80 yards today with my ACC's  Now all I need is 40 more days and a critter with a pulse I can put a stop too.

I can't begin to say how much i love having that kind of accuracy with a broadhead.  having that much confidence as you do with field tips helps out so much.  It is one less thing to think about allowing you to think about placing the pin where it goes rather than "Oh Please, Oh Please" or is the wind going to push me too far right....  Or the other 90 things buck/ Bull fever brings.

I've heard that being in high pressure situations like that is good practice for hunting.  I've heard of pro archers that can win gold medals but when it came to shooting thier first doe.  they were shaky and felt more pressure.  So sounds like your getting good practice.

I am excited.  I just picked up my elk tag.  I have several options of where to go.  Luckily I have alot of friends who drew limited entry tags where big bulls are abound.  I have been invited to hang out and help them out with thiers, with the option of whacking a cow or spike if the oppurtunity presents itself.  I am so jazzed about getting out.  I am pounding with field tips and broadheads right now.  I think I may end up filling a quiver with half fixed blades (which are all dialed and tuned already right now and the other six with mechanicals for those high pressure shots.  Like if there is a deer 70 yards out with a little bit of wind.  let the Kumasi fly!!!
